Started by members of the Osmanli Dergah, a Sufi Muslim group that’s found a home in the Catskill Mountains of Upstate New York, the restaurant serves international food focusing on Malaysian, Indian, Turkish, Thai, and American recipes. The restaurant is known throughout the area for its lamb chop, gyro, hummus, Javanese noodles and Malay curries. The story of this restaurant is one of leaving biases at the door. Hasan and Erdem, who own the restaurant, have stayed true to their ethos, despite past conflicts with some in their small pastoral town. With help from their undeniably intriguing food, The Tulip and the Rose Cafe, as well as the members of the Osmanli Dergah, have been embraced by their community and continues to thrive.
